City foundation of Cartagena de Indias in 1533

Pedro de Heredia arrived in the Indian city of Calamar (which is now the historic center) searching for a place where there was running water so they could establish. Difficult meeting with the autochthones were lived and Heredia explored the environing grounds to finally found the city of Cartagena de Poniente (West Cartagena) to differ from Cartagena de Levante (Est Cartagena) in Spain. The date was June 1st 1533.

After that the city was limited to the interior zone, the grounds were separated between the settlers and all the juridical fees were attributed to the birth of the village. So a couple months later, the city came to life since a temporary stop from Pedro de Heredia.
