The history of Cartagena de Indias
Cartagena de Indias has been
founded the 1st June 1533 by Pedro
Heredia. Cartagena has become prospect because of the gold,
emeralds exploitation and other riches. It was also a commercial
port for the boats navigating from Peru to Cuba and then to
Spain. Unfortunately, the city has been reduce to ash in 1552.
After that, Heredia has forbidden and building construction
other than brick, tiles and rocks.
The prosperity of Cartagena de
Indias has attracted the interest of pirates. And the first
pirate attack was those from the French
Roberto Baal. After the
next years, Cartagena has known other
attacks by John Hawkins, the Juan brothers and
Martin Cote, and
Francis Drake. After
these attacks, a wall has been built around the city. Cartagena
has become the most protected city in South America. The Spanish
conceived forts, batteries and castles thanks to the ingenuity
of their architects and the Italians. Finally, the work has been
done be African slaves.
