The city of Cartagena de Indias is a really vast region and is divided in numerous quarters classified with a life quality indicator from 1 to 6. The “stratos” allows separating the costs of services offered to residents because of the financial and social situation. Therefore, a strato 1 is a place where life conditions are really difficult so these residents have favours concerning the essential services received in order to ease their survival. Evidently, a poor quarter is place not recommended for a visitor because certain problematic situations could be lived.

For mercy, take conscience that it’s not just dangerous quarters, but the people living there, so don’t merchandize with the ambulant sellers that are in the nice quarters, because they come from the poor quarters. What counts is to inform people and not hide information in order for them choosing with clarity and liberty.

Many transportation ways exist in Cartagena and the most secure is still the taxi. However, we strongly recommend you to call a taxi station operating with a frequency radio in order to avoid disarrangements. Often, taxis increase their fees when they see a visitor and also don’t give the service if you go farther then the centro or Bocagrande. Avoid using the bus, and motor bike taxis as well as bicycle taxis.
