The road traffic in Cartagena de Indias
If you live in the touristic zone of
Bocagrande
or close to the sea, there’s a lot of chance that road traffic
doesn’t affect you. However, if you go further than the historic
center, then you’ll see in every colour! One of the biggest
causes of traffic is certainly the number of buses that are
driven by unsafe drivers that try to anticipate the other bus in
front of him to try taking people or customers.
Since the beginning of the 90s, the apparition of motor bikes
came complicating the road security in an alarming way and
increasing the problems in many categories of life. Each day or
almost, restrictions are imposed to try balancing the situation,
but the applications of these conditions aren’t really respected
by the responsibility of authorities.
The most important street is the
Pedro de Heredia avenue that cuts the city in two and passes
close from the la Popa Convent
and gets to the highway linking Cartagena with Barranquilla and
continues to Turbaco.
During the high touristic season from the end of December to the
end of January, it’s even difficult to enter Bocagrande due to
the important number of cars and taxis.
We suggest you not to use the buses for a security matter.
